Annotated Bibliography
APA 7-
Citation machine- Blanché Ulrich. (2019). Banksy: Urban Art in a Material World. (R. Jonas, Trans.). Tectum Verlag.
From the CSU library website- Blanché, U. (2016). Banksy. In Banksy. Tectum Wissenschaftsverlag.
Within this book many different perspectives are talked about. Although the main subject of this book is about the UK artist Banksy it also talks about other artists, art movements and ideologies about the art world. This book starts off with talking about consumption and consumerism, this being the definitions and what it means in society and then further discusses those topics within the art world and the artists that are a part of that. The second half of this book starts to discuss graffiti, Banksy and what his art represents and how it fights against those ideologies and societal norms that have been so normalized.
This source is quite credible due to the fact that it is a published book as well as how recent it was made which was 2016. The intended audience of this book is to those who are interested in Banksy, his art as well as what he stands for and against politically through his art. This source is very helpful for me because it is using both supporting information about Banksy as well as explaining the opposing side of consumerism artists like Andy Warhol. I will be using both information about Banksy as well as the information about consumerism and consumption as well as how Andy Warhol played into them.
Citation machine- Warhol, Andy. (2011). In Benezit Dictionary of Artists. Oxford University Press.
From the website itself- (2011, October 31). Warhol, Andy. Benezit Dictionary of Artists. https://www-oxfordartonline-com.ezproxy2.library.colostate.edu/benezit/view/10.1093/benz/9780199773787.001.0001/acref-9780199773787-e-00194600.
This article lists so much information about Andy Warhol. It starts off with talking about Andy’s background, childhood, jobs and different art he made. It talks about his films, prints, paintings and ideas about America and consumerism and what pushed him to create what he did. It talks about his most notable and his rise within the art world as well as the topics he discussed or showed within his art. It continues with a listing of all exhibitions both group and solo as well as a listing of all museum and gallery holdings and ends with all auction records of his art.
This article was published by the Oxford University press as well as published within the last 10 years that being in 2011. It has since been revised as late as 2016 with all resources being properly cited. This articles intended audience is those interested in learning about Andy Warhol and getting a detailed timeline of all exhibitions, museums, galleries and auction records. This article contrasts to that of the Banksy article because it only discusses what Andy Warhol did and does not bring up how it contradicts Banksy. I will be using the information regarding his works using silk screen and how it ties to American consumption and his views or objectivity and fame.

Research Inquiry:
-
What problem, issue, or phenomenon do you want to explore through the final project?
-
In my final project I want to portray and explore the irony of mass production and mass consumption of art, as well as poking fun at those in the art community whose sole purpose is to make money.
-
-
What will be the sub-questions (categories) you want to explore or discuss this inquiry?
-
My sub- categories that it will explore are Banksy and Andy Warhol as opposing artists with different agendas with Banksy following closely to my inquiry and Andy Warhol being that of the artists I am speaking and critiquing. I will also be discussing graffiti and screen printing as mediums and the historic context of them within the art world.
-
-
How will arts or your secondary field knowledge be integrated into your research?
-
My art will be integrated into my final with creating a multi-layered screen print poster image to display the critique of money hungry artists while also having irony in the fact that I am also mass producing those images. I will also be using my secondary field of business to help portray the business side of art or as Andy Warhol likes to call himself, a “ Business Artists”. Along with that I will have my poster portraying that of old propaganda posters about war bonds. I think it would be interesting to play with the idea of advertising artists which we don't see or “selling art bonds” to help fund small artists.
-
Purpose Statement:
-
Describe the final project and how it can help you to explore your research inquiry. (Decide if you will present the project as an essay or an art project too.)
-
For my Final Project I will be presenting an essay and art project together. I think this will help me put into words and show the kind of artists I am critiquing as well as putting my own spin and portraying those feelings through my art.
-
-
How will you apply the integrated knowledge from art, the secondary areas, and your findings of the midterm project to this final project?
-
I will apply my knowledge of the art and business world to help me understand the information I find. My knowledge will also help me explain further my reasoning through my current knowledge about those fields. In terms of using knowledge from my midterm I will be taking away the ideas of focusing on two main artists, those being Banksy and Andy Warhol as well as also sticking to printmaking methods and making a lot more prints.
-
-
The significance/value/worth of your research?
-
The value of my research will probably be mainly personal gain by helping to put into words and imagery the way I feel about the art world and the money aspect of it. It will also help show my viewers that same ideology as well. I want it to not be a slander but more of a critique/ parody of those artists because although I may not agree with those artists they are still valuable themselves within the art world.
-
Expected results (outcomes):
-
What do you expect to learn from this research?
-
I expect to learn more about Banksy and Andy Warhol and how they both either critique or play into consumerism within the art world.
-
-
What are your expected outcomes? List them.
-
-
An essay expressing my views on the art community and how it is influenced by money
-
An art project that is a critique/ parody of my findings and personal feelings about the art community
-
Investigation and concerns:
-
How will you conduct your research investigation? Identify research methods or art techniques that will be used to explore your research.
-
I will be conducting my research by reading books and articles about both artists as well as watching documentaries on both to help me view both the biased and non- biased sides of each artist. This will be my qualitative research for my final. My art techniques will be screen printing for this project.
-
-
Identify potential research, scholars, artists, etc. that will inform your work. Be specific and describe all aspects of your project. (You should review and reference from your annotated bibliographies)
-
First of the two sources I have thus far are a book about Banksy which also discussed consumerism and how Andy Warhol plays into that as well as a Oxford press article about Andy Warhol and his use of screen printing and ideas about media and consumption. My other research and sources will be coming from Kanopy documentaries about each artist themselves so I can get a more fair and unbiased idea of what they are known for and not being compared against each other. I will probably reutilize the reading Ways of Seeing because it perfectly described how Andy Warhol used publicity and how screen printing played arole in that along with the imagery itself. Lastly with this I will be using my previous midterm project and printmaking class projects to help influence the style and idea of the art I will be making. I will also be researching consumerism and at as a whole as well as the history of propaganda posters. All sources have been listed above.
-
-
Is there any possible ethical issue you should be aware of and take care of?
-
Although my art project and my essay may seem as slander or bashing of thoses I am critiquing I will have to be very careful to express that it is a parody and personal feeling of the subject. I want it to allow for a discussion of the topic and not a way of making fun of or undervaluing these artists or such artists as I am critiquing.
-
Analysis and interpretation:
-
How will you analyze and interpret/report your project results and findings?
-
I will research and analyze the readings of the two artists to help me clarify or help to contradict my feelings and views toward the art community who value money over many other things.
-
-
How will you know your research is successful or not successful?
-
I will know my research was successful if I am able to successfully show how Banksy uses his art to critique mass consumption and consumerism and show how Andy Warhol through his art did the complete opposite. It will also be successful if I am able to create an image that can be dark humor and a parody of that discovery.
-
Create a proposed timeline by weeks.
By the end of the week 8th-14th-
I will watch one of the kanopy videos and make notes as well as going back and finding quotes and notes from the Ways of Seeing reading.
By the end of the week 15th-21st-
I will watch the second video and make notes as well as start making sketches for my art

FINAL PROJECT
My final project will be 3 to 5+, 11 by 17 parody propaganda posters with three to four layers to complete the image. I have decided to do a poster to continue my irony of mass production while speaking on that very same subject. With this though I bring in a new concept about War bond propaganda posters by showing the selling aspect of those posters and how it was for a benefit. In my case the benefit would be supporting small artists.

Progress Paragraph
This past week I watched and made notes of the Kanopy video on Banksy. I also read through the dissertation on Propaganda posters in the US and made notes on that as well. I am planning to finish the second video on Andy Warhol and start making sketch's of my poster. I will also be researching, ordering and buying my materials so they will arrive over break for me to start the art making process the following week. Below will be my notes from both the reading and video that I watched.
Notes on Propaganda poster paper-

Heavily influenced by German expressionist art!-41
April 17 1917 was when artists were commissioned to create posters to support the red cross, federal loan campaign and more for the US in WWI. -2
“Use no pathos”, dehumanize the enemy/ patriotism - 3
Expressionistic type art in the posters in Germany is used- 3
Propaganda posters help with impact on visual culture in america-4
Sway public opinion- 5 and 7
Very graphic/expressionism is the style- 8/9
Selling the war and gaining civilian support- 17
Deliberate and straightforward, sell something, easy to read and understand- 26
Because they were trying to “sell” both the war and the identity of the country their designs had to stand on the fence between being overtly avant-garde and overly realistic. -pg 26
Not only an object but also patriotism and an idea!-27
Fear and freedom!!!!-30
Both posters use an appeal to the ethos through a narrative type scene that is abstracted just enough to make it easy to place oneself or a loved one inside of the narrative. -35

Progress Paragraph
Today I have finished making a sketch of the idea for my poster. I will also be uploading a link of the propaganda poster that I will be referencing. I have also found the website in which I will be buying my materials from. I will be buying a screen and a squeegee for this project as well as colored inks once I have my image finalized. The link to the reference poster is https://www.google.com/search?q=help+crush+the+menace+of+the+sea+poster&rlz=1C1YQLS_enUS747US747&sxsrf=ALeKk03g1Hi3J1Pv-iqIty32PRgU0XY9Jg:1605733298075&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwi-q9fW_oztAhUKpp4KHRhGByoQ_AUoAXoECAwQAw&biw=1366&bih=568. The website in which i will be buying my screen and squeegee from is at Screenprinting.com. Lastly I will be posting my image of my sketch below. I am also hoping to finish another reading or the other documentary before break.
